A Binary-Ordered Probit Model of Cigarette Demand
نویسندگان
چکیده
This study analyzes the demand for cigarettes tting observed zero outcomes with a trivariate model consisting of an equation for the starting smoking decision, an equation for the quitting decision, and an equation that models the level of cigarettes consumed. Five competing speci cations are considered to explain level, with the ordered probit, which accommodates pile-ups of counts in the dependent variable, providing the best t. Marginal e¤ects of explanatory variables are calculated providing strong evidence of race and gender di¤erences in consumption patterns. The estimated marginal e¤ects are robust to alternative categorizations of the level of cigarettes. The Analysis of Bayesian Probit Regression of Binary and Polychotomous Response Data
The goal of this study is to introduce a statistical method regarding the analysis of specific latent data for regression analysis of the discrete data and to build a relation between a probit regression model (related to the discrete response) and normal linear regression model (related to the latent data of continuous response). This method provides precise inferences on binary and multinomia...
متن کاملWorking Paper Series Categorical Data Categorical Data
Categorical outcome (or discrete outcome or qualitative response) regression models are models for a discrete dependent variable recording in which of two or more categories an outcome of interest lies. For binary data (two categories) probit and logit models or semiparametric methods are used. For multinomial data (more than two categories) that are unordered, common models are multinomial and...
متن کاملAn Ordered Probit Approach for Exploring the Role of Self-Efficacy and Financial Literacy on Personal Finance Behavior
The present study investigates the impact of financial self-efficacy on personal finance behavior. To this end, the data collected from the questionnaire have been employed. Once the validity and reliability of the questionnaire are confirmed, the relation between financial self-efficacy and the likelihood of holding a specific financial product is studied using the multivariate Probit model. P...
متن کاملMenu costs , firm size and price rigidity
If menu costs have a non-negligible lump-sum component and with larger firms having greater benefits from price adjustments, then larger firms will change price more frequently than smaller firms. Data from New Zealand firms support this hypothesis. Price duration decreases as firm size increases. Ordered probit analysis indicates the effect comes primarily from larger firms being more likely t...
متن کاملThe Dynamic Spatial Ordered Probit Model: Methods for Capturing Patterns of Spatial and Temporal Autocorrelation in Ordered Response Data, Using Bayesian Estimation
Many databases involve ordered discrete responses in a temporal and spatial context, including, for example, land development intensity levels, vehicle ownership, and pavement conditions. An appreciation of such behaviors requires rigorous statistical methods, recognizing spatial effects and dynamic processes. This study develops a dynamic spatial ordered probit (DSOP) model in order to capture...
